Question Description

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.

Behavior changes are actions or methods that changes an individual’s personal habits and lifestyle to prevent diseases or injuries. However, behavioral change can be difficult due to social determinants, such as socioeconomic status that inhibits people to change their lifestyles. For instance, low-income families’ unhealthy eating habits that leads to comorbidities, such as obesity and cardiovascular diseases due to lack of education on unhealthy lifestyle (Bouton, 2015, p.29-36). Another factor that can make behavior change difficult is having a negative supportive group correlating with a negative environmental factor. For example, if a recovering alcoholic is surrounded by peers that continuously drinks around them, then it will be hard for the recovering alcoholic to maintain abstinence from drinking and old habits will be triggered.

Education is a factor that challenges behavior changes. People are not educated on how to manage their lifestyle, so they continue to have an unhealthy eating lifestyle. For example, consuming excessive amount of preservative and processed foods that contains high sodium and sugar concentration levels. This unhealthy lifestyle without the appropriate dieting and physical activities is what leads to hypertension, diabetes and various cardiovascular diseases (Kelly & Barker, 2016, p.109-116).

The goal of public health is to prevent and control diseases through intervention methods using behavioral change. The role of the public health is to teach the public and the communities how to manage their lifestyle and habits, which will decrease the prevalence of the diseases. The public health can also influence behavior change through preventative care by providing educational resources on their website or at schools and medical facilities for the public on how to prevent and control diseases.

There are many factors that arises when helping people to change their behavior. A factor is resistance; the older individuals get, the more resistance they exhibit in-regards to accepting new behavioral lifestyle. There is also lack of feedback, people tend to accept things they can visualize. For example, a group of individuals known as Group A are told that to prevent the flu, they should wash their hands to get rid of the bacteria, which will reduce exposure to the virus. However, bacteria are at the microscopic levels, therefore, they are not visible to the humans’ eyes, which might create uncertainty that the bacteria do not exist or, if they are washing their hand sufficiently to prevent the illness. However, if group A is told that there is a chemical substance that changes the color of your hand when bacteria is present, then the hand washing frequency will increase and the exposure to the virus will decrease.

The different classification of behavioral change are preventative health behavior, illness behavior, and sick-role behavior. Preventative health behavior, which is the act of a healthy individual maintaining their health by practicing preventive methods. For example, these individuals exercise regularly and have a healthy diet. Illness behavior are individuals who are sick, and they research and discover appropriate remedies for their illness. For example, an individual utilizing the honey-lime/lemon home remedies to soothe their cold/flu symptoms. The Sick-role behavior is an individual who is sick and are getting medical treatment, however, this causes the person to be exempted from their responsibilities until they feel better. For example, someone who has a severe case of pneumonia would be hospitalized getting medical treament, along with being relieved of there responsibilities (Glanz et al., 2015, p.10).
