Acid-base disorders can result in a patient going from feeling perfectly fine one minute to being admitted to an emergent care unit in an acute care facility in a short space of time.

Select one of the following four common acid-base disorders:

• Metabolic acidosis
• Metabolic alkalosis
• Respiratory acidosis
• Respiratory alkalosis

1. In your first post,
   • Provide a 250 word summary analysis which summarizes the condition you selected: identify a specific medical diagnosis or disease that can lead to these complications; what area(s) or systems/tissues of the body are most prone; what population(s) are most likely to experience this set of complications; how are the complications medically managed. Discuss and explain, applying principles learned in your lesson readings. Be sure to cite your specific sources and/or pages in textbook.
   • Next, assume you need to explain this condition to a patient in simple yet clear and accurate terms. Write an additional 3-5 sentence explanation of what you’d tell the patient.
2. Respond to a minimum of two classmates, addressing their selection of complications and addressing any information you believe is missing in their clinical analysis and/or in the explanation they have crafted to deliver to the patient. Provide your suggestions on what needs to be addressed.
3. In addition to providing constructive feedback to your peers, your posts should include responses to any questions asked, as well as replies.
