Format of Final Reflection
To be considered for grading, your paper must include each component described in the instructions for this assignment.
Opening Description
Describe the work as you would to someone who hasn’t seen it. Refer to specific areas of the work of art. Do not simply list what you see, but paint a detailed picture with words. Your description should be so clear and specific that the reader can imagine the work of art in their mind as they read.
Topic Sentences
Write a clear and concise topic sentence, in italics, at the beginning of each paragraph in your Formal Analysis. Include only one visual element or principle of design in each topic sentence and clearly state how it is used, generally, to reinforce the power, meaning, emotion, or mood in the work of art that you select.
Formal Analysis
Write two paragraphs:
- one paragraph is devoted to the artist’s use of a specific visual element
- one paragraph is devoted to the artist’s use of a specific principle of design
In each paragraph, you will describe, in rich detail, how the artist used a specific visual element or a specific principle of design in different areas within the artwork. Be sure that each paragraph illustrates and supports your topic sentence and conveys the significance of what you have observed. Within each paragraph, you must include between three and five specific supporting observations from your chosen art object. Each sentence in this part must be clear and descriptive.
Writing Guidelines
- Organize what you plan to say before you write.
- Write concise and complete sentences that clearly convey what you intend to say.
- Be sure that sentences are in a logical order and make sense.
- Use third person, present tense, as this will simplify and clarify your sentence structure.
- As much as possible, do not refer to yourself or frequently say “I”.
- Never use colloquial words and phrases, such as “that color pops out”.
- Fix all spelling errors, sentence fragments, or other grammar and syntax problems.
- Support your statements with careful observations about the art.
Proofread and Revise
Before you submit your reflection, take a little more time to proofread your work to make sure that what you write actually conveys what you intend to say. Your paper must be clearly-written, well-supported, grammatically correct, and free of spelling and punctuation errors. This is a college level assignment!
Submission Guidelines
Please submit your assignment to the Submit Assignment link at the upper right. I prefer that you upload a PDF. Please label your file as follows:

Grading
You will be graded on how well you demonstrate your ability to perform a visual analysis, based on the approach presented in this course. To be successful, please support your key points with frequent observations of the work of art, and with concepts from the readings and videos.
