Ethical Dilemma

Ethical Dilemma

Ethical Dilemma

Question Description

Discussion Topic: Ethical Dilemma

  • Use the ethical dilemma (p. 104) “When is it OK to Be Deviant?” from the textbook (Adams & Galanes, 2018).

In this scenario, there is most definitely an ethical dilemma. There are many concerns with advertising misinformation to current and potential customers. Advertising that the apple juice is 100% pure when it is adulterated could bring about many legal concerns. Even though other members don’t have a problem with the situation, it could still result in damage to the organization. Moreover, the company’s brand could be tarnished if consumers find out that they are being lied to about the consistency of the apple juice.

Whether an action was ethical or unethical has always been a dilemma in the workplace. Based on the scenario given in the text I do believe that at times being deviant is necessary. Just because majority of the members chose to side with the unethical choice does not make it right. I would let the other members know I did not agree with their decision and make it clear that I would stick with my own opinion.

Although it would not be easy I would withstand the pressure coming from others by staying true to myself. All other opinions and feelings would just be ignored. I do believe it’s best to withstand the pressure because a person who doesn’t stand for something will fall for anything. There would be no reason for me to go along with the other members. This would make myself just as unethical as the others.

It’s best to resist because although it may not occur immediately you would be recognized and looked at highly for not conforming to the rest of the group. Managers and/or higher members of the group will see your resistance and appreciate it. You will also feel better about yourself for sticking up for what you believe in. I would stick to my deviance and take whatever comes with it.

Class,

Deviants are members who consistently violate group norms (Adams 2018). In the text book example of being deviant, it definitely creates an ethical dilemma. I would respond to the group with advertising a product to be 100% pure and not following through with that commitment, can lead to huge legal repercussions. I would research other similar situations and provide details to legal ramifications that resulted. I would acknowledge the others pressure to back off, but persist on communicating the problems this will cause. Instead of just saying this is wrong, I would brainstorm with ideas to better promote the product as we advertise it 100% pure juice. There is every ethical reason to resist this group. I do not believe there would be reason to go along with the group unless the leader decided the way to go was adulterated apple juice and refused to let me argue my case. I would definitely document my concerns and position on the decision.
