Q1 Process engineering primarily focuses on the design,operation and on-site maintenance of chemical and various materialmanufacturing processes. Similar to other disciplines, Computational FluidDynamics (CFD) has attained a certain maturity in order to analyze andoptimize these processes. Besides convective, turbulent and diffusive transportof mass, momentum and energy, CFD in process engineering has to accountfor several other complexities such as multi-phase fluids including phasechanges, the kinetics of chemical and biological conversion, unknown materialand thermodynamic properties, among others. In this context:
(i) Give a brief note on therole of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in general and its applicationspecific to process engineering systems.
(ii) Brief the major typesof classical CFD techniques as well as new developments in solving complexprocess engineering problems.
(iii) Critically analyse theapplicability, benefits and general use of CFD tools in process industry.
