Question Description

Review the case studies in Chapter 4 of the text (CHAPTER ATTACHED AS PDF)

Assess a case study of your choice and describe why you have given the client the diagnosis you did and how this diagnosis most closely matches the symptoms. Using the same case example, identify the factors that would specifically affect treatment in the case (familial, environmental, and so on).

Case Study: Out-of-seat Behavior

This case study is more of a group study in a way. “Many young children have difficulty staying in their seats for a protracted period of time,” as stated in the textbook (Cipani, 2017). This can just be an age specific issue; children have trouble sitting still for a long period time. Most kinds start school around the age of 5 and most have not had to be a formal school setting prior to that. A newly regimented schedule may be very hard for them to get used. Most children start to get the concept fairly quickly and most schools created schedules that don’t keep children in their seats for too long at one time. Most classes have them moving during class to a rug or back to their seat or getting together in groups in specialized areas of the classroom. This allows for them to gradually get used to sitting for longer times over the period of the school year.

If the child is still having trouble with sitting during the allotted timeframe in school then they could be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADD/ADHD). This kind of disorder is fairly common but no one treatment strategy fits all (Berger & Maeir, 2014). Some children may need to be medicated, others may need other kinds of therapeutic approaches, some may need specialized school, and others may need a combination of multiple approaches. With the children that are unable to stay in their seats the teacher may need to approach the parents to come up with a strategy to help the situation. In some cases that may affect the treatment for the child could be environmental, for example, the child’s parent may not adhere to the treatment plan. There could be a limit on finances or education on the parent’s part (Berger & Maeir, 2014). Another reason for a factor that may cause for the treatment to be derailed could be if the parents do not want to admit their child has an issue (Berger & Maeir, 2014). Some parents want their children to be perfect and anything that may show as a weakness is disregarded.
